Alex decided it was time to review each officer's progress to see if they needed to make adjustments to the plan. She found Bucket first since the food problem was the most pressing need.
He was outside, making arcane adjustments to a pair of automatons with saws for hands. His newest lumberjacks had increased production.
"Latest model?" she asked.
"I adjusted the ego nodes, which increased output 33%," said Bucket, wagging his eyebrows.
"Nice work," said Alex. "Have you seen the food gap?"
He breathed in deeply and exhaled with a sigh. "You're never happy, are you?"
"An army has to eat," said Alex. "Can you rebuild your tent makers into more food collection? We'll be out of food in a month if we don't adjust now."
Bucket groaned. "I just got those tent makers humming like a loom."
"Yes, you were great," said Alex. "But we don't need tents anymore, or at least we can manage the tent production as needed."
"Fine, fine," said Bucket, looking to the sky.
"Yes, General?" she suggested, shooting him a wink as she walked away.
She found Blaze next near the edge of the plateau, working with his cadre of mages. They were standing in a line along the cliff, firing sputtering firebolts into the jungle below.
He joined her away from the mages.
"How's it going?" she asked, raising an eyebrow.
Blaze made a face, glanced back towards his mages, then said, "Swimmingly if the plan is to make our enemies die of laughter."
"That great, huh?"
He put a hand to his forehead. "I think in my absence, I'd forgotten how mediocre they are. Most of them were farmers before I found they had a spark of magical ability in them. They mostly knew how to coax rain from the sky for their crops, so I thought I could train them into masters of the elemental magics, but so far the best they could do is make sparklers at a child's party."
Alex ignored the tightness in her chest. She couldn't let Blaze see her disappointment, not in him, but in the skill level of the mages. She'd hoped to have a formidable cadre of mages to counteract the sheer number of enemies they would have to contend with.
She put a hand on his shoulder. "Maybe they're not meant to be fire mages."
"And maybe I'm not meant to be a trainer of mages," said Blaze.
"Keep at it," she said. "I'm sure you'll figure something out."
When she left him, she tried not to mentally write off the mages, despite the heavy disadvantages. While she could have an arcane academy made, which would give the mages more options for upgrades, there was no way she could divert the resources without knowing if it was going to work.
There was still time to salvage them. Maybe Blaze could find a way for them to contribute that wasn't as obvious as sheer firepower.
Lily and Mancalf were with the bulk of the troops. Her Company of the Fallen had taken the new soldiers to the great fields behind the camps, and were running them through the paces while they observed.
